The Great Ecstasy of Enigmatic Absurdity

The Studio, Los Angeles
(view)

The Studio presents Daniel Hawkins’ The Great Ecstasy of Enigmatic Absurdity.  For this installation the artist has cast a stretched canvas into a vertically standing rectangular cement monolith. He subsequently attempts to rediscover the lost object, chipping away at the cement in an absurd search for an ecstatic truth that may validate the objects and forms behind his Sisyphean effort.
In this artwork-become-excavation, Hawkins questions the determinacy of meaning as he navigates the undefined space between monolith and canvas, between absurd and profound. Ultimately, he allows for the viewer to determine the success of the piece and whether his monument of enigmatic absurdity is a moving poetic gesture or a pathetic attempt at finding meaning.
